Public Hearing Notices


Pursuant to Michigan Public Act 110 of 2006, as amended (the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act), notice is hereby given that the Sylvan Lake Planning Commission will hold two public hearings  at 7:00 p.m. or shortly after on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. The public hearing will be held at the Sylvan Lake Community Center, 2456 Pontiac Drive, Sylvan Lake, MI 48320. 

The purpose of the hearings is to receive public comments on the following issues. 

  1. A proposed Zoning Map Amendment (rezoning) for the former Whitfield School Site containing the parcels listed below from CS Community Service to C-2 General Commercial.  Lot numbers: 18-01-236-002, 18-01-236-003, 18-01-236-004 
  2. A proposed text amendment to Chapter 78 Zoning, of the Sylvan Lake City Code: Article VI. Section 78-613. “Fences and Screening,” describing the location and type of fencing allowed on residentially zoned property. 

A copy of the proposed amendments is available for review at the City Hall during regular business hours. 

All interested parties are welcome to attend the public hearing and present their comments. Written comments concerning the proposals may be submitted to the City Manager at Sylvan Lake City Hall, 1820 Inverness, Sylvan Lake, MI 48320, before 4:00 p.m. the day of the public hearing.       


PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Zoning Board of Appeals has been requested to grant a variance from the zoning ordinance to construct a front porch addition at 1356 Avondale, Sylvan Lake, MI 48320.  This property is located in the R1 Residential zoning district. 

Property Description: T3N, R9E, SEC 36 SYLVAN LAKE SUB NO 3 LOT 191 & S 20 FT OF LOT 192 

Variance Required: Front Yard Setback Sec: Section 78-296 of the Code of Ordinances states the minimum front yard setback for this property is 30’. The petitioner is requesting approval to construct a 22.5’-wide front porch that will be 25’ from the front property line, Requiring a front yard setback variance of five (5) feet.

According to the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance, we are notifying all property owners within 300 feet of the parcel in question that the Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a Public Hearing Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sylvan Lake Community Center, 2456 Pontiac Drive, Sylvan Lake, MI 48320, to hear and consider any objections to granting this variance.  Written comments will be accepted at City Hall until 4:00 p.m. the day of the public hearing.
