History and Traditions

As part of the 50th Anniversary of Sylvan Lake in 1997, the Historical Committee published Sylvan Lake 1818-1997, a book proudly presenting the history of the area. General historical events as well as more personal memories were included, most of which are included here.


Sylvan Lake - A History Overview
Sylvan Lake's history dates back to 1818 when an expedition led by Reverend John Montieth rode into the area between Detroit and Pontiac.

Daniel Whitfield School
May 22, 1852, was the first day of school in Sylvan Lake.

Sylvan Lake Resort
Detroiters were full of enthusiasm over the project of establishing a great summer resort between Pontiac and Orchard Lake.

Fresh Air Camp
The Sylvan Lake Community Center is the site of the former Detroit Free Press Fresh Air Camp.

The Interurban
Operating between Poniac and Sylvan Lake, the first interurban railroad service in Oakland County began service in 1895.

The Oakland County Boat Club
The Oakland County Boat Club has been part of Sylvan Lake history since prior to 1917 when it was officially started.


Sylvan Lake City Hall
This small, charming cottage style building was built in 1929 by architect Charles Fisher.

The members of the Historical Committee for the 50th Anniversary of Sylvan Lake have researched and compiled the information in the history section. Every attempt to be accurate and factual has been made, but the correctness of the information is not guaranteed.

Planting a Memorial Tree

Anyone wishing to plant a memorial tree in the city must receive permission from the City Manager. Please ask for the written guidelines for planting a tree at the front counter in City Hall.

4th of July Fireworks

Fireworks have been a tradition in Sylvan Lake for at least 70 years. The fireworks are currently sponsored by the Oakland County Boat Club.

Memorial Day Parade

Sylvan Lake has held a Memorial Day Parade celebration since around the end of WWII. The Memorial Day parade marches from City Hall to Memorial Park.
